My editor has asked me to write a tag line for book II, Ketha’s Daughter. This is a single sentence that encapsulates the meaning of the book and “hooks” the reader. Twenty-five words or less…

It’s tough.

How do you take a book of 129,000 words and condense it into twenty-five words?

I have already done this exercise once, with Heart of Hythea. So it should be easier the second time around, right? And yet every book has its own special meaning, and I have to find the right twenty-five words for Ketha.

So I started by thinking about the main character and what happens to her within the book. That didn’t help all that much, because she goes through a lot. How to choose one thing that can be described in a single sentence? Then I began to think about my secret theme. It is the one thing that connects all the action within the book.

Here is the best tag line I have come up with so far:

The young warrior Gwenn Faircrow, born to serve a cruel Goddess, discovers the true meaning of freedom in the company of a gentle-hearted wanderer.

What do you think?
